I had a first-time-ever score at the thrift store on Friday. I've picked up a few buttons cards here and there mixed with other stuff but this is the first time I found two jars full of vintage buttons. I brought them home, sorted through them all, cut off lots of material and thread, and gave the keepers a bubble bath. For a girl that has too many other things to do, I found the whole process very calming.
The whole lot had quite a few reds and oranges. As far as I know, I don't have any bakelite buttons but those orange/vanilla swirl ones look like they might be. Barbara at oodles and oodles has a post about how to tell if something is bakelite. I'm not selling the buttons or anything so it really doesn't matter to me but I just like the scientific experiment part of it. I'm putting Scrubbing Bubbles on my shopping list today and am going to put a few of the buttons to the test...and maybe, possibly, find time to clean my bathrooms while I'm at it.
Nice!
Love the rhinestone ones too.

Score for you!
I always smell them to tell...
when I sort them with my daughter she calls them "stinky" buttons...she's nine and profficient in button sorting!
She tells glass buttons by clinking on her teeth!

There's nothing like playing with a load of buttons, even if you don't ever use them...just nice to know you have them,

I have a small collection of buttons but have yet to test them. I'm curious though so I might give this a try. As someone who loves aprons I just love your blog. I'm so glad I found you.

I'm not sure why vintage buttons make me so happy, but they do!
