No...the mystery is not why I didn't iron the apron before taking a picture of it (nor is it why the little pink thrift store sells aprons for $0.25...or why that makes me feel so guilty). The mystery here is the buttons and button holes. The apron has a button on each side of the waistband and a button hole at the top of the pockets. I don't see how these are supposed to go together. Any apron experts out there have any ideas?
I think the mystery is solved and I can't believe it...the apron turns into a bonnet. Yes, a bonnet. The best clue is that the backside of the pocket section is also finished with the little yellow rick-rack. I tried on the bonnet...and no photos will be taken...ever. Thanks everybody! Next up, I may ask for some help on the weirdest round embroidered linen thing I found.
And I had to share this apron idea (from Country Home I think)...love the apron as storage.
Hi Julie,
Could it be so that the ever-able woman who owned that darling apron could 'hike' up the pocket when she needs her tools handy? Kind of like a combination kitchen apron/tool belt? Or maybe it makes a little kangaroo pouch for picking berries and cherries in the back yard? Just guessing!

I have two theories:
1. Harvest Apron - you don't really want your berries or snap peas floppin down around your knees.
2. Laundry Day Apron - to keep the clothes pins handy while hanging the sheets out to dry.
Regardless, it's super cute and for 25 cents to boot!

Forgot to say. . . that yes, I think the buttoning is to "hike" up the apron (as Andrea mentioned) for the purposes I listed.

Love the aprons! I wonder if it is an apron that can convert into a bonnet?

very cute. and i agree with the harvest apron idea. button it up so you can gather veggies, eggs, or other things.

My grandmother had a button up apron too - for gathering things into - when she went to the garden she would button it up then hold the entire thing over the kitchen sink unbutton and dump the veggies in for washing.
On Sundays as she would be fixing family lunch she would button one of those towels with the crochet top onto the button - to wipe her hands on.
Thanks for the stroll down that lane of memory again.

Yep, convertible clothes pin apron. That's my guess, since my mother had something similar. I remember watching my mother hanging the wet clothes on the line. She always wore a red bandana to keep her lovely, black curls out of her face. I remember thinking how beautiful she was. Lovely.

i came across the same predicament once. and mine buttoned into a bonnet. or at least that's what i figured it was. but the harvest and laundry ideas sound good too.
