collector boxes

Dscf0118_edited1 Dscf0119_edited1

Remember last week when I posted that my last project is always my favorite?  So, what has it been?...like 8 days and I'm already on to a new "favorite".

I bought two Martha Stewart Crafts collector boxes at Michaels because they were on clearance.  The collector boxes are like little shadow boxes that open and are slightly padded to allow you to pin something inside.  They also have a ribbon attached to the back so you can hang them.  They are such a pretty pink color and I knew I'd find a use for them.

I created the heart version using the back of a pattern envelope cut with pinking shears, layered with a paper from Basic Grey, layered again with twill tape, a straight pin with a heart, and a vintage button tied with brown & white baker's twine.  I attached the heart with two of the straight pins that came with the box.

For the sweet little girl version, I layered a pattern piece on a pink patterned paper and cut it out with pinking shears. I added another vintage button tied with baker's twine and the little girl from a vintage sewing pattern.  Again, the collage is pinned to the inside using the pins that came with the box.

I have submitted some of my work for consideration to only one magazine so far but would love any advice anyone may have about trying this again.  Do you think something "do-able" like this would fit any publications...a sewing magazine?....a paper crafts magazine?  I would love to share something like this.  Also, I think these would make good "kits".  If I offered something like this, would anyone be interested?  Please leave a comment or email me...I'd love to hear from you.

Oh!! Put me down for a kit! I've just recently become your biggest fan! I LOVE your clipboards on Etsy! And yes, I think seamstresses and papercrafters alike would love to see your work in their magazines! Cute, cute, cute! You are very talented!

Very sweet!... I would think kits of some sort each with a little extra so the person could feel free to make one just a bit differnt if they so chose... How about Romantic Homes magazine for a submission?

Maddie

these are soo cute. i love the heart. altough the little girl and pocket would be great in my little girls room. too cute.

LOVE them! I was looking at your site last week and it prompted me to buy some vintage patterns at the thrift store so that I can make something like your beautiful art for my sewing room. Thank you so much for sharing your art and ideas!!!!

This is such a cool idea and so versatile. Thanks so much for the great idea!

I sure would and you are going to bankrupt me!! These are so cute.

And I received the sewing box yesterday and it is better to see in person than on here! Fantastic! My mom is going to love it!!

The shadow boxes are too cute! Did you try Mary Engelbreit?? This looks like something you would find in her magazine. Or we can advertise on our blogs if you made a cute little Jane's Apron Icon!!

What about trying Cloth Paper Scissors?
Love the heart one, kits are a great idea then we could do our own version of your inspiring pictures.

These are precious! Are you submitting to any of the Somerset mags?

I would be interested in seeing something like this in a magazine. I bet you have enough ideas and crafts to publish your own magazine.

I would absolutely be interested in a kit- I think the boxes you've created are gorgeous. And I really appreciate the way you've shared what you've done- you're very generous with your ideas.

I'm afraid I don't have any ideas to offer, but I just want to agree with the other gals that we love your work, and would love to see you/your ideas featured in a magazine!!

Julie,

LOVE LOVE LOVE your creations, especially the vintage sewing pattern dress on a hanger. Would love to buy a kit if you put one together.

Hi Julie,

I ADORE ALLL of your work! I think you should TOTALLY be published...try Somerset, they are always looking for original art. I can get you the info. if needed. :0)

Kits are a great idea!!!

Hugs!

I love these! So pretty, and pink, and sweet. :) I have a little shadowbox that I enjoy arranging bits and pieces in... your's have inspired me to be more creative!

I think these would be lovely items to submit to a magazine! I've lately been thinking of doing up a proposal for an instructional piece and sending it to a few publications, myself! Do keep us updated on how this goes... I wish you the best of luck!!

Have a lovely weekend! :)

I really like the first one! I would love to have a kit to make one like it :)

Genius! I bought some of these too! however the only one's left at my Michaels were the scalloped ones.

You are so clever! I love the one with the little girl: she is so cheerful, and somehow that thing highlights the importance of pockets to children.

Oh, I just LOoooooove these. I have some of those boxes and they don't look nearly as pretty as that. Thanks for the inspiration! You are gooood.

These are darling! My first submission to a mag would be to MS herself. I am sure she would love to see how you used her craft supplies. I have seen several craft bloggers on her show. She seems pretty supportive of the craft blogging world.

I think both sewing a craft publications would be a great place to start! They are adorable!

i have three of those sitting in my studio. those are lovely.

These are so sweet! (I bought the boxes on clearence too :)
How about submitting to Real Simple? Also, Martha Stewart often has guest crafters on, this would be a perfect prject for them!

I would love to see you put together some kits- I would most definitely be interested!! I do not have great sewing abilities but can do the basics so small projects involving basic stitches would be a fantastic way to bridge paper crafts and fabric/sewing! Keep up the great work- super inspiration!!
